This will scrape off any paint residue on your tattoo gun and prevent clogging.

-Submerge the head of the gun into rubbing alcohol.

The head is the end that holds the ink. (The first few times you do this will make a lot of ink come out, which is why we recommend doing it in a bucket or something.)

-Remove it from the alcohol and wipe any excess away with a paper towel.

-Now, put it back inside and gently rotate it so both sides are covered in alcohol.

The “cross-hatching” or “dotting” method is a relatively simple one, as it requires drawing lines from point to point that cross each other at an angle.

The lines can be straight or curved. The distance between the two points where they cross can also be just a single dot.

How Do You Set The Voltage On A Tattoo Machine?

If you want to set a higher voltage on your tattoo machine, but it can’t get set that high, then what you can do is clip in a simple resistor (which is a wire with a “shorted-out” end).

Then, attach it to the power cord of the tattoo machine, and you can adjust the voltage with this “resistor-set.”

You can use a “wall wart” with a built-in transformer for a substantially higher voltage.

This allows for the VOLTAGE of your tattoo machine to be adjusted by adding or subtracting the direct current (DC) into or out of it.

The max voltage from an electric adapter is around 240 volts. So if you buy an adapter with a voltage of 12 volts and attach it to a wall wart with a 12-volt transformer.

Then you can lower the voltage or raise it by adding or subtracting the DC voltage into or out of your adapter.

To do this, attach your adapter to the tattoo machine, plug the wall wart into the tattoo machine, and then you can adjust your voltage with the different voltage settings on your wall wart.

For example: If you have a 22-watt tattoo machine and want to set your voltage to 10.6 volts, connect the black wire of your transformer adapter directly to the yellow positive on your adapter.

And then, connect the red wire of your transformer adapter directly to the violet negative on your adapter.

Then, with your voltmeter or multimeter, adjust the voltage on your wall wart until you reach 10.6 volts.

You can also place a resistor between the adapter and the wall wart. Then add/subtract DC into or out of your tattoo machine by adjusting or adding or subtracting the resistor.

The higher you set the value of the resistor, the lower your voltage is going to be.

Where Do O Rings Go On Tattoo Guns?

O rings go to the tattoo gun. That’s why you need to practice your tattoo machine before trying to use it with ink, needles, and other sharp objects.

O rings keep the hand from piercing a hole or jamming inside the device, causing a machine malfunction and serious injury or death for the person using it.

O rings are like a safety net that protects both the user and whoever waits in line for their first time at this shop.

Rolls of o rings are available in bulk through your tattoo shop and can be found at just about any drug store or big box store. The o ring is super cheap and simple to use.

There are no machines to buy special tools for, no batteries to change, and no on-hand tool supplies required.

Before you attempt to use the machine you are buying, have an anti-jammey tool ready. If you’re familiar with the machine, you may find that is all you need. If not, however, keep reading.

You want to make sure that the machine is off and unplugged before touching it.

First, check your device for a small screw somewhere near the back of the gun where there are two components of metal that look like screws in a simple mechanism.

The small screw will be located at the top of an oval or round bubble-shaped part that holds the needles. Make sure you can see it.

Then, if you have the two screws in your hand, set them down and flip the machine’s faceplate over.

It will usually be upside down, but it has to be a certain way to hold the needle. Then, in comes this part.

There may be a small plastic screw-type thingy that stays on by itself that you want to find at this point (although there is always one of these things that fall out of its socket when you least expect it).

Next, you want to find the screw that screws into the back of the machine where all the cords are.

The cord on this part is black, and it may look like it plugs in or snaps in place. However, if you have a screwdriver handy and find this screw, unscrew it.  

If you find the screw, unscrew it and remove the screws holding the faceplate on.

Then, flip the machine’s faceplate over and check where two other screws go in. Make sure they’re there and unscrew them.

Once you’ve taken everything off, set all of it aside since you don’t need it anymore. Take out your needle and roll your o ring through it.

Once you get the o ring to fit through the needle, you’re almost ready to begin using your new machine.

If you find a sharp metal tip on your needle, this is a good time to unscrew the little metal piece that holds it in place.

You may want a tool for this, but try to do it with your fingers if you can because then you won’t have to buy any tools or special screwdrivers.

To unscrew it, get a hold of one side and twist it off. This metal tip looks like a tiny screw with a flat side and a sharp point.


Tattoo guns can be a great tool and affordable way to get started in the world of body art.

They tend to be fairly simple and easy to use, even for people who aren’t mechanically inclined.
