What Stroke Length Should a Tattoo Lining Be? If you ask any artist what the perfect stroke length for lining tattoos is, you will probably receive a different answer. It varies depending on your line's thickness, tattoo area, and preferred strokes. But with all these variables, it can be helpful to know what size of fiber tip to use when line weight is concerned. If you are talking about 1/4″ or longer lines (the length of the needle), then anything 5-10 microns should be fine. For example, if you are doing a 3/4″ line with an 8mm tip, it would make sense to use a 6-8mm fiber tip. I have used many different lengths and have found that (in most cases), the shorter the line is, the more you need to go over it to make it stand out. Before lining your client's tattoo, you must decide how thick a line you will create. This will also determine the type of needle that you need and the length that it needs to be. I personally like a 0.25mm or thinner line. This makes me feel like I am sticking delicate lines in my skin, and the tiniest tip gives me maximum control of where I want the ink to go. When I want to do a 3/4″ full-color line, I usually use a 3mm line with an 8mm needle. This is just my preference and works for me in most cases. Can A Tattoo Gun Go Too Deep? No! If your tattoo gun goes too deep, it can disfigure and cause excessive bleeding. If you have a photo-sensitive reaction, limit the time you are out in the sun and always wear sunscreen. Be careful if you take aspirin or any medication that makes your skin light-sensitive. Make sure to keep your tattoo covered while you are in the sun, out of direct sunlight, and don't sleep in the sun. If you are allergic to a preservative, stop using that ink immediately and consider finding a new supplier. Can A Tattoo Gun Be A Liner And Shader? A tattoo artist generally uses a tattoo gun to put color into the needle for tattooing purposes. The most common ones are the shaders and liners. A shader, also referred to as a rotary tattoo machine, features a broad needle bar with a small tip (jewel) and a high wattage. A liner tattoo gun has a thin needle bar and jewel with lower wattage. What's important to know is that each gun is only used for administering one kind of tattoo - either shading or lining, but never both at the same time. The needle bar's width is crucial for administering a tattoo. A thin needle bar usually makes larger, wider lines, and a wide needle bar makes for finer, thinner lines. It's impossible to mix up liners and shaders because of this difference in the width of the needle bars. A liner is used to create bolder and more pronounced lines. The liners are designed to move rapidly to minimize the time needed for lining during the tattoo process. Moreover, the process is very quick when a liner is used because the needle never stops moving while a line is being made. Sometimes you must screw them down very slowly and even a little bit too far at first for the machine not to seize up. I usually pull back on my set-up to increase the tension so it doesn't break your string. This can be difficult at times, but luckily there is an easy fix: Put your setting stones into place before tuning. If you don't have any stones, you may find your machine seizing up if the screws are completely tightened down. Once you have all your stones in place, you can tune from there. You may find that in certain areas of the lining design, your machine may pull back a little bit or even stick halfway into the skin. To fix this, you can either push it through a little harder to get it out of the skin (be careful not to break your needle) or loosen your screws slightly, depending on how far they are. If they are too far, they will loosen more than they should and screw themselves too loose and not give enough tension. You can tighten them a little bit if they are too loose. Once you have it tuned correctly, loosen the screws enough that the needle moves freely back and forth, but not so much that it falls out of your skin. How Can I Make My Tattoo Machine Hit Harder? Proper ink pressure: The key to getting a good hit is proper ink pressure. Ink pressure is the force generated by your tattoo machine that is transmitted through the needle into your skin. This varies with different machines, but generally, thicker lines take more pressure than thin lines. Adjust your motor: Some motors have a mechanism that you can use to increase or decrease the amount of torque (force) the motor puts on the needle. If you don't see any such mechanism, try adjusting the extra coil if you have one; this will increase the amount of pressure your needle is exposed to. Generally speaking, a tattoo needle enters in one of two places: The periosteum (the area on the bone surface that is not covered by the skin) A joint between two bones (such as the knee or elbow) It's important to note that you don't need to hit a bone when getting a tattoo. You can get away with all sorts of things if your tattoo artist is skilled enough. You see, the skin is not a solid surface. It's full of tiny blood vessels, and when you get a minor cut, it bleeds into the surrounding area. As you can imagine, when you're tattooing an area of skin that isn't being cut by the needle, your tattoo artist doesn't need to hit bone with his needle to get ink into the skin.
